Capelin is a small northern fish of the smelt family. It is smoked ungutted, so there is often roe inside, and many buy capelin for exactly that.
The meat is fatty and soft, the bones small and barely noticeable. Pull off the head and eat the rest whole.
Smoke penetrates a small fish all the way through, so capelin has a rich, slightly salty taste.
